|
| On the occasion of the
full moon, on Sunday, November 25th, the Thai
of Bangkok and of all the kingdom celebrate
Loy Kratong. A traditional festival of lights
between religious faiths and magic superstitions.
|
Where to leave
your kratong?
The festival is celebrated at nightfall,
everywhere in Thailand and where there is
water. Even on the khlongs! But the main
part of the atmosphere and the most magnificent
scenes, in Bangkok, take place on the edges
of the Chao Phraya river, at the level of
the Wat Arun temple.
The festival also counts numerous animations,
entertainments, fireworks in the popular
places of the capital as for example on
the edges of the ponds of Suan Lumphini,
Chatu Chak, Sirikit National Convention
Center or the University of Chulalongkorn.

Kratong: festival of the lights |

>>
Loy Kratong is celebrated during the full
moon of the twelfth lunar month. It is generally
in November. It is a very old tradition whose
origin and meaning vary according to the faiths
and the regions, as well as the way of celebrating
it.
Loy means floating and kratong refers to the
idea of "floating receptacle". The
kratong is generally made of natural materials
of the region. It mostly appears under the
shape of a saucer made of banana tree leaves
decorated with flowers and on which are arranged
three sticks of incense and candles.
Some people also add a coin, hoping in return
for good fortune, what especially makes the
happiness of the children who will go fishing
for the kratongs once the feast ended.
The kratong generally has the shape of an
opened lotus flower, a swan, a chedi...
Having said that, in the province of Tak for
example, the plates in trunk of banana tree
are replaced by coconuts which are connected
the ones to the others and then thrown all
together on the Ping river to form a brilliant
chain. As for Chiang Maï, the event is
downright celebrated in the airs with huge
lanterns made of paper which rise in the sky
like brilliant hot-air balloons. (/JM) |
