>> Bangkok couldn't
exist without its street commerce. Hundreds
and thousands of them across the city start
setting up early in the morning for the daily
shifts and early evening for the night market
clients. Lack of education and a good start
in life has led some to build their lives
around these little street businesses. And
it seems to work.
City life happens around these smiling people
who offer food, snacks, drinks... and that's
without mentioning the small street canteens,
who even without a hard roof over their heads
do very well for themselves. There's a stream
of mobile stalls specialising in food - selling
satay, fired insects, ice-cream, fruit, freshly
squeezed orange juice, fresh coconut, peanuts,
dried squid - to name but a few. Customers
from more conventional backgrounds (office
workers for example) take it all in their
stride and seem delighted by the services
on offer.
Other than the food business, which dominates
the streets, you can also find cobblers, seamstresses,
key cutters... who all do a good job for a
good price. (/LA) |
