 .Night market
Patpong, the famous red light street in Bangkok, is the home of the infernal night market that sets up every evening. The persistent vendors, cheeky touts, the noise of the gogo bars, all contribute to the character of the steamy nights in this hot quarter of the city.

Setting up the market at the end of the afternoon, in Patpong, off Silom Road, Bangkok
 .Steamy nights in Patpong
>> During the day, nothing's going on. Patpong is a little quiet soi, or to be more precise, two little quiet sois (Patpong 1 and Patpong 2) recovering from their hectic nights. Then, as the sun fades behind the end of Silom Road, life starts up again. The street stalls start setting up to reassemble the infamous and infernal night market of Patpong surrounded by its night-time attractions known the world over.

Under the neon lights of the cramped stalls the atmosphere isn't always a fun one. The legendary Thai smile is not always the currency of trade. The vendors don't joke around, they're there to earn their living and to sell. - sell at any cost. It's all very clear - the jam-packed stalls, mainly frequented by tourists more curious than intent on buying, are full of traditional souvenirs, brand name clothes, watches, videos and CD's etc. Most of these goods are fake but the starting prices are often exorbitant. But bargaining starts quickly once a customer shows interest and you can leave with a purchase at a third of the original asking price.

Weary of traipsing the stalls, one on top of the other, it's easy to succumb to the dulcet tones of the Asian sirens in their gogo bars. With their garish advertisements, there are many to choose from - and for a place to stop and have a beer - why not? (/LA)
