Ko Samet (Ko Kaew Phitsadan "the magic crystal
island") has attracted a lot of Thai for a
long time. And even poets. Sunthorn Phu, a
classical author, a dramatist still famous
in the country, has assiduously frequented
the island where, thereafter, he has elected
residence. The fantastic epic of Phra Aphaimani
was born from this magic place. They are the
adventures of a prince exiled in a submerged
universe where he is kept prisonner by a giantess
in love. The young prince, guided by a kindly
siren, will fly for his life and will go to
the island of Samet where he will find refuge.
He succeeded in giving his host the slip by
putting her to sleep thanks to the sound of
a magic flute. The statue, always present
on the Hat Sai Kaew beach of Ko Samet prolongs
the memory of this tale which perfectly sticks
to the atmosphere of the island. (/JZ) |
