>> Ko Samui
is situated off the East Coast of Thailand
in the Anthong (Golden Ball) National Marine
Park. It's the largest of an archipelago of
more than 80 islands of which most are uninhabited.
This insular paradise covers 250km² and is
the third largest island in the Kingdom after
Ko Phuket and Ko Chang.
In the folds of Surat Thani province, this
tropical spot of white, sandy beaches is well
situated at 60km west of the continental town
of Surat Thani. It was discovered at the beginning
of the 70's by backpackers when there were
just huts without electricity or running water
and was initially inhabited by a population
living mainly off fishing and coconut plantations.
These areas are still main contributors to
the local economy - Ko Samui sends more than
2 million coconuts to Bangkok every month.
From accommodation to suit all budgets, an
abundance of tropical vegetation, waterfalls
and idyllic beaches to numerous Buddhist temples
and friendly locals, it altogether makes for
a very attractive destination. (/LA) |
