>> Songkran is the
most important festival of the year in the
Kingdom, it marks the new lunar year on the
Buddhist calendar (around 13 April) and also
the start of the summer. Celebrated from 12-14th
April, 11-15th in some places, the event creates
a huge amount of excitement especially in
places like Chiang Mai and Pattaya for example.
The holiday is celebrated all over the country
but each region adapts the festivities according
to its local customs and traditions. Whatever
the case, Songkran day is reputed to be the
hottest day of the year and, as it's also
the water festival, everyone everywhere takes
to the streets to have fun. The locals equip
themselves with buckets and cool each other
down by throwing large amounts of water over
each other, hence starting the New Year in
an atmosphere of fun and good humour.
In Bangkok, the biggest events take place
at the Sanam Luang, at Phra Sumen fort, Wisut
Kasat Road, Ratchadamnoen Road and also Khao
San Road. From 12-14th you'll find a whole
series of events and activities from concerts,
films, shows, sporting competitions to parades
and the Miss Songkran contest. (/LA) |
