every year in November, it is the time of building
your kratong, a small saucer made of the leaves
and the trunk of banana tree. In the evening of
the first full moon of the month, by the river,
it will be the time for lighting a candle and a
baton of incense, to place a coin on it and to put
it in the water so that it floats and goes away
to get lost in the course of the river.
Loy Kratong, the most magical feast of the kingdom,
is celebrated in all the kingdom, at the edge
of rivers and lakes, and the foreigners are invited
to participate. The symbol is clear : you honour
the divinities of the river and confide them all
your troubles and all your sins of the last twelve
months. Of Brahmanical inspiration, this ceremony
also allows to gain the gods favours for the year
to come.
Loy Kratong does not necessarily take place at
the same date in all the country and we advise
you to inquire locally with the tourist information
office to know the date and the most convenient
place to participate in it. In the North of the
kingdom, in Chiang Mai notably, Loy Kratong is
the occasion of a spectacular lanterns release,
cylindrical balloons with warm air which also
take in heavens the troubles of the inhabitants.
