 .Frequently Ask Questions
Children
Is it easy to find schools for our children in Thailand?
There’re very good international schools for the little expatriates from all nationalities in Thailand. The teaching and the supervising are of good quality and dispensed in English and in Thai. The cost is high but the firm that expatriate you will often pay the expenses. (/JM)
Clothes
How do you get dressed in Thailand?
Generally, everyone get dressed as he wants. There’s no particular concern, the Thai are very open-minded. But there’re some rules to be respected in some religious places or royal spaces. In these particular places, no bare shoulders, no visible ankle. You have to be dressed with proper and long clothes. Particularly in front of a representation of Buddha. (/JM)
Date of the festivities
Why the dates of the big festivities in Thailand are different from a year to the other?
The dates of the big events like for instance the Thai New Year (feast of the water: Songkran in April) are not strictly celebrated at the same date each year, like the occidental New Year the 1st of January. It’s just because they are not governed by the same calendar. In Asia, the feasts follow the lunar calendar. And the cycles are not similar to ours. (/JM)
Electricity
What type of electricity is there in Thailand?
What do the plugs look like?

The current is, like in Europe, an alternating current 220/230V – 50Hz. But the plugs are nothing like the plugs we know in Europe. They are similar to the American plugs, that’s to say narrow plugs with two flat pins. More and more often, the wall plugs accept the plugs with round pins. If not, plan to bring an adapter (that you can find on the spot). (/JM)
Food
Is the food very particular in Thailand?
You can have the choice between classic food (inasmuch as some dishes are similar to European dishes) and refined food. In the two cases, you eat very well. The only thing you have to be attentive to is pepper. Traditionally, the Thai dishes are very spicy. You only have to ask what are the spicy dishes (Phet mai kha(p)?) or do not season too much the speciality you choose. (/JM)
Gift
How do you have to behave in Thailand at the time of the delivery of a gift?
To offer or receive a gift in Thailand is the proof of a strong friendship or gratitude. The choice of the gift to offer to a Thai is free. A present from the country you come from will be very appreciated. But when you offer or receive a wrapped present, don’t wait for the moment for the opening. The tradition wants the packet to be opened later, private (maybe in order not to see the deception on the face in case of a bad choice!!!). (/JM)
Language
What language can you speak in Thailand?
Ideally you should speak… Thai. But stop dreaming, this language is difficult and requires practical experience before being able to communicate properly with the natives. But English is the good alternative and is essential in order to be understood. (/JM)
Massage (training)
Where can you learn the techniques of the Thai massage in Thailand?
There’re a lot of addresses where you can be initiated to the techniques of the Thai massage in Thailand. In Bangkok, the reference is the Wat Pho training center. There, you can even be delivered a diploma. So even more than an introduction, the Wat Pho training center trains professional masseurs you can join. For a 4 weeks training period, you must allow 7.000 bahts until the diploma. (/JM)
Medical emergency
What to do in case of a health problem in Bangkok or in Thailand?
In case of a medical emergency in a big Thai city, know that the health services are very well organized and outstanding and that the taking care of the foreigners is unfailing (at least they speak English). You have to ask to be brought to the nearer big hospital (Mc Cornick Hospital in Chiang Mai, Overbrook Hospital in Chiang Rai, Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok, read the article 'A running well organization'). The emergency services work 24h/24h. (/JM)

Where can you buy good music (trendy) in Bangkok?
The trendier place in Bangkok is the Siam Square. Between the university and the MBK malls, Siam center and discovery center, there’re a whole host of little very trendy shops. There, you can find shoes, clothes, jewels, photography shops (studio and printing), karaoke, restaurants, pubs… and little music stores. Everything can be find. (/JM)
Shopping (purchase of souvenirs)
What to buy and where can you buy souvenirs in Bangkok?
We have no particular advice to give you in this field because you can buy souvenirs at every corner in Thailand. Then, in Bangkok, there is a place that offers a double interest in order to do this type of purchase. The Chatu Chak weekend market (called Chatu Chak Market, Jatujak Market or JJ Market) is a good address (read the article 'Jatu Jak Market, the reference'). It’s at the same time a concentrate of Thai culture and the ideal place to purchase any kind of things. (/JM)

Tiger Balm
How and where can you find Tiger Balm in Thailand?
This question is very common in the mails you send because it’s difficult or almost impossible to find Tiger Balm in the occidental countries like France for instance (the product is forbidden for the sale -and confiscated at the customs- read the article 'Put a Tiger balm in your…'). It’s true that its properties are interesting. You can find this product very easily everywhere in Thailand and hardly at every corner in Bangkok (apothecary). In order not to advertise, we’ve chosen not to communicate any addresses on our website. But we can communicate by emails right now and tell you how to get it by correspondence. (/JM)

Time
What time is it in Thaïland?
Bangkok is located in G zone like Hanoi (Viet Nam), Jakarta (Indonasia), Phnom-Penh (Cambodgia)... Local time is UTC+7.

Tourism
How to ask for very precise information about the visits, the events, the transports… in Bangkok and in Thailand?
For any question about the calendar of the events, the specific itineraries, the special visits, the exhibitions, the transports… we advice you to contact the tourism agency agents, directly on the spot (see 'Useful addresses') or at distance through the website (tourismthailand.org). (/JM)
Travel documentation
How can you get tourist documentation before going to Thailand?
From afar or through the Internet it’s quite easy to get tourist documentation on the Siam kingdom by going on the Tourism Authority of Thailand website. There, you’ll find a vast number of tourist informations and an email address in order to ask written aids that will be sent by post. All the good travel agencies also put brochures at disposal that present the tourist activities of the country. Eventually the tourist guides can be a good help, like for instance Cartoville Bangkok Gallimard, le Routard, Hachette guide, Lonely Planet, Atlas guide… (/JM)
Water
Can you drink water from the tap?
It’s recommended not to drink the water from the tap that is served here and there in Thailand. The offer in bottled water is huge and very cheap (read “The water the body needs”). So even if some of them have a strange taste, favour bottled water! (/JM)
