Like everywhere else, the Thais are passionate about the cinema. Bangkok has some fine cinematic complexes where you can enjoy a good film - in the cool!

>> The City of Angels' cinemas certainly have 'class'! They fit perfectly into the mould of the luxury stores frequented by the well turned out. They are pleasant, elegant and efficient. There's not a lot of difference between the cinemas here and those in the west - here you can still smell the popcorn. There are just a few little Thai touches to remind you where you are. For a start, the hostesses in their over-pressed uniforms with their 'ultra-bright' smiles lead you right to the door of the dark and cool salles - very cool!! Discreet ushers, guide latecomers to their seats by torchlight as the salles are already plunged into darkness (that no longer happens at home).

The first fifteen minutes conditions you to the level of sound that will burst your eardrums. It's made the most of, with Thai adverts selling luxury goods and beauty products like whitening cream intermittent with previews of upcoming films. Then just before the film starts, it's time to pay homage to His Majesty King Rama IX. Everyone rises and stands for the duration of a short moving tribute of about a minute.

The programming of the films, mainly in English (original version) is deliberately commercialised in phase with the European cinemas, with films coming out within a few weeks of each other. The Thai subtitles can be a bit disconcerting for foreign viewers that haven't yet mastered Shakespeare's English. The tendency to glance at the words at the bottom of the screen will not help at all! (/LA)
