 .Health - unwelcome insects
When it comes to your health, nothing should be neglected. Prevention is better than cure when it comes to warding against minor discomforts than can turn into major trouble. Seemingly innocent, the tropical mosquito can land us in hospital.

Besides the preventative treatments against serious infections (those that exist), the first reaction is to protect oneself from mosquito bites when staying in an infected area. Simple solutions are often the best, starting with clothes that cover arms and legs, especially the ankles and using a mosquito repellent. In susceptible areas it's wise to use a mosquito net covered with insecticide at night and citronella is always effective. The mosquito coil (repelling incense) and the electric diffuser also work very well. Do use them!
 .Menacing mosquitoes
>> Among the insects that can spoil life for us in Thailand, the mosquito has to be top. In addition to the unpleasant bites inflicted on us, generally between sunset and sunrise, the two-winged pests can transmit some serious diseases such as malaria, dengue fever or Japanese encephalitis. However, these can be avoided and prevention is our best ally.

Most of the country isn't bothered by malaria, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. The main areas are basically around the borders and in jungle areas. Central regions and big cities do not have a malaria problem. Dengue fever is transmitted to humans by the 'aede' (a diurnal species). The risks of contracting this disease are low, but exist nonetheless, especially in rural areas near stagnant water. The rice fields and pig farms in rural areas are the stomping grounds for the 'culex', carrier of Japanese encephalitis - which is especially prevalent during the rainy season (July to October).

For the first two there are no vaccinations, however, it is possible to take anti-malaria tablets that reduce the symptoms, but often have unpleasant side-effects. For Japanese encephalitis there is a new vaccine out that offers good protection. These 3 diseases should not be taken lightly as they can have serious consequences. It's advisable to consult a doctor immediately if you have any sign of possible symptoms (/LA)
