| For the love of horses?
Perhaps. For the profit - maybe. For the heat
of the races - for sure! Bangkokians gather
at the capital's racecourse on Sundays to
stake their bets - and sometimes win! |

>> The colossal curved
stands of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC),
every other Sunday afternoon, reveal an obvious
inclination that the inhabitants of Bangkok
have -especially the men- to stake to the
turf. The price of the access to the arenas
(100 bahts) and the amount of the sums locked
up for the bets (between 50 and 10,000 bahts,
basic bracket) let think that the visitors
are real fans.
Impassioned and excited, the racegoers follow,
on the track's side or on the monitors, inside
the buildings of the racecourse, the outcome
of the races which are linked together from
12.30 to 18 o'clock. If the waiting is long,
often due to hard settings, in particular
those of the horses in the starting gates
-sometimes 20 minutes-, the brawl is short
and disputed.
At the RBSC (photo), that day, the distance
of predilection is 1,100 meters. Jockeys and
horses at the top of their form give the best
and do not seem to disappoint the effusive
aficionados. Won or not, what does it matter?
Provided that there is rapture. And in any
case, there is the Sunday after to retrieve
his losses, at the Royal Turf Club of Thaïland
(RTCT). (/JZ) |
