| There are various ways
to discover a region. The Adventure Racing
Thailand Association offers the courageous
amongst us the chance to do this in a sporting
setting. On a Sunday in June the organizers
invite participants on a trek to explore the
Erawan Falls. |

>> With their enthusiasm
for nature and discovery, the organisers of
the Power Bar Challenge Series 2002 'Adventure
Racing Thailand', shared the joy of discovering
the fairytale setting of the heart of the
tropical forest in Kanchanaburi Province with
the participants. Sixty odd kilometres north-west
of Kanchanaburi city, the association proposed
a new stage - the 'Erawan Falls Challenge'
- a trek around and under the Erawan waterfalls
right in the middle of the national park,
a stone's throw from the Si Nakharin reservoir.
Open to everyone, the competition against
the clock, lead the participants in teams
of two on a steep course. The two circuits
in the forest of 10 and 15 km, were respectively
reserved for the Adventure competitors and
the Extreme competitors (more hilly terrain).
They proposed running, walking, scrambling
(climbing on all fours), descending ravines
and climbing up and down the waterfall.
Each competitor took into consideration the
difficulties according to his/her level but
if some of them were here 'to win', others,
more relaxed but equally determined, were
there for the setting rather than the performance.
Whatever the case, the hundred or so teams
that took part 'immersed' themselves for 3
and a half hours at best and 6 and a half
hours for those less pressed. The main thing
was to have fun! (/LA) |
