| Yet another exceptional
temple. Wat Suthat is among the most beautiful
temples in the capital. In addition to the
bronze image of Buddha that dates back to
the Sukhothai era (XIV c.), the temple boasts
the largest 'wihan' in Bangkok. |

>> Thailand can boast
around 32,000 wats and perhaps more as others
are being discovered even to this day. Bangkok
hosts more than 400 and each one has its own
individual characteristics. Wat Suthat itself
is renowned amongst other things, for having
the largest wihan in Bangkok within its walls.
As soon as you enter the temple, the severity
of the place takes you by surprise. The entire
surface of the cloister's courtyard is covered
in grey marble. The light reflecting on the
unmarked floors of the cloister corridors
(phuttawat) which encircle the heart of the
interior is remarkable at certain times of
the day, the floors having never been walked
on in shoes.
As can be found in other wats, there are many
statues representing different mythological
characters to be found here placed carefully
around the 'bot'. The tranquillity of the
place and the presence of hundreds of Buddha
images all along the cloister commands respect
and contemplation, just like when we enter
a bot dominated by an imposing bronze statue
of Buddha (8m high) dating back to the 14th
c. (Sukhothai).
The construction started by Rama I and completed
by Rama III displays a multitude of fresco
murals and doors of rare artistic quality,
one of which was carved by King Rama II himself
and can now be seen in the National museum.
Of course the size of the bot and the wihan,
the tallest in Bangkok (Rattanakosin style
- beginning of 19th c.) gives the place extra
character. (/LA) |
