| In Bangkok the pedestrian
is NOT king! He doesn't have total priority
as in some European countries. On the contrary,
pavement users would do well to remain vigilant
at all times as motorists are barely aware
of their existence. |

- watch out ! |

>> Priority to the
biggest - that's what you have to remember
when walking around Bangkok, if you don't
want to get your toes run over. Crossing the
road is not dangerous but neither is it easy,
a moment's distraction could be a disaster.
The traffic is heavy and chaotic and there's
no room for the pedestrian off the pavements.
Even using zebra crossings, crossing the road
can be a real obstacle course. Usually, the
little flashing green indicates that pedestrians
can cross safely - but not in Bangkok!! Here,
traffic in the lane parallel to the pedestrian
crossing is not bound by the stop signs and
can freely turn left- you can guess the rest.
A few courteous drivers do however, allow
the jaywalkers to cross.
Some of the major routes in the city do have
pedestrian walkways; even if you have to make
the effort to climb all the steps, it's strongly
advised that you use them. The same with the
skytrain footbridges - another good way to
avoid the busy roads at any time of day. (/LA) |
