| To avoid the stress and
hubbub of the capital's intense traffic, some
choose the river taxis on the khlongs (canals).
The limited network satisfies many followers
of this rapid means of transport. |

| Speedy departure of a river
taxi on San Sap Khlong in Bangkok - part of
the 'Venice of Asia'! The agile ticket collector
stands on the ledge of the boat while taking
fares. The crash helmet is needed to protect
him from banging his head when passing under
numerous bridges along the route. |

>> For certain destinations,
the skytrain would be the only faster way
to get there in the City of Angels. Nevertheless,
these two methods of transport are victims
of the same problem, their networks are very
limited. The skytrain however, is in the process
of being expanded, work is already underway
in the south of the city, but the khlongs,
which were more numerous in the past, can
only hope to remain for Entertainment purposes.
Over the course of time, the canals have lost
out to the tarmacked roads.
This popular mode of transport has the advantage
of being cheap, regular and frequent, you
just need to be fortunate enough to have a
stop that's on your journey; good maps of
the city show the khlongs and their stops.
For the fare, you need to specify your destination
to the conductor (who rarely speak English).
Despite these positive points, the khlongs
are no longer popular and few tourists use
them, they're thought to be too dangerous.
It is true that getting on and off the boats
is an experience in itself and rather risky,
they barely stop - and it can be smelly too!
This marvellous means of transport, so typically
Asian, will entrance you nonetheless and you
won't be able to resist getting splashed by
the murky waters of the legendary khlongs
of Bangkok. But do be careful! (/LA) |
