.Let us breathe... |

|
| Bangkok is alive, it breathes.
It breathes badly, but it breathes! In partial
apnoea, how long will the City of Angels hold
out against the suffocating, toxic smog? People
take small measures to protect themselves,
in anticipation of a brighter future. |

| A line of traffic has just
started up at the crossroads of Lan Luang,
Petchaburi and Sawankhalok roads in Bangkok.
You can make out the thick cloud of fumes
emanating from the cars. The harmful spectre
obviously bothers the policeman who adjusts
his mask to protect himself. |

>> Bangkok hasn't
yet won the prize for the most polluted capital
on this planet, but it's working at it! Labelled
with the record for the worst traffic, the
City of Angels is amongst the great cities
noted for their unbreathable air. These two
flaws go together. The average person can
witness the dreadful quality of air without
needing scientific proof or analysis and the
buildings in the centre with their facades
blackened by the dust, would not beg to differ.
We breathe it in, we swallow it, some even
feel the need to spit it out - it makes us
choke. It's there at all times, you can almost
feel it, it's almost impossible to breathe.
What do we call this insidious substance that
sticks in the throats of the people in the
streets and even penetrates our homes gathering
in every nook and cranny? Dust? Urban gas?
Pollution? Strong words but we've said it.
The pollution in Bangkok, mainly due to the
traffic and its emission of toxic gases, is
suffocating.
The worst place to find yourself is at a junction,
at the traffic lights when the lines of cars
and motorbikes start up. Then you can really
measure the fumes' destructiveness. The authorities
try to remedy the problem by alleviating the
traffic... meanwhile those in the streets
wear masks, a small attempt to limit the damage
caused. (/LA) |
