in Bangkok. This famous weekend shopping haven
is the biggest, best stocked and probably
the most frequented of markets and above all
the cheapest in the city. |

| Chatu Chak Weekend Market
(Phahonyothin Road, Bangkok) is open on
Saturdays and Sundays from 7am to 6pm. However,
the plant and book sections are open all week
long. Getting there by car is relatively simple
and parking is well organised but if you don't
intend to buy a lot in one go, it's advisable
to take the bus or skytrain (last stop towards
the north of the city). Lastly, to enjoy and
make the most of this well stocked market,
it's best to get there early. |

>> Asians have the
ability to and make an art of maximising every
single space available, especially when it
comes to business. Chatu Chak Market (Jatujak
or JJ Market) is a perfect illustration of
this. Bangkok's most famous of weekend markets
is a prime example of organisation where everything
is on top of each other but laid out in a
logical manner without muddle or obstacles.
Chatu Chak is also the most popular market
in Bangkok and attracts not only tourists,
partial to this archaic and convivial concentration
of commerce, but also the locals who come
for the range and quantity of goods on offer.
To draw up a detailed list of all the articles
on sale would be impossible - remember that
this haven for fans of unauthorized shopping
is the largest in Bangkok. 11 different themes
divided into 27 well laid out sections stretch
out over 15 hectares to the top of Chatu Chak
Park.
The voices of the cajoling announcements,
the diverse background music and the continuous
hubbub bring to mind the atmosphere at European
fairs, but with an Asian touch! The smells
and odours don't respect the limits of their
stands either. The smell of wood from the
local artisan's selling ceramics, cloth, silks...
flirt unashamedly with the scent of spices,
incense and local products like fruit and
vegetables and even the smells of the animals.
Of course Chatu Chak would not be complete
without a clothes section and has everything
on offer including shoes and second-hand clothes
and accessories - all at unbeatable prices.
Each area offers its own refreshments - the
market boasts some 400 eating-places. (/LA) |
