 .Bangkok transport
Solutions to the city's congestion problems due to the dense traffic are in hand. An extension to the skytrain and the construction of the first underground lines planned for 2003/4 will perhaps alleviate this issue that requires such urgent attention.

 .A Bangkok underground
>> The project for an underground railway system in Bangkok, being built with the aim to alleviate the city's traffic congestion, is well underway. The construction of this network is in its advanced stages and hopes to improve the environment and the quality of life for residents and the comfort of visitors. The first line should be partially operational by end 2003, beginning 2004. The work on the extension of the Skytrain, begun at the end of 1999, should be completed around the same time.

The cost of the underground project has reached 108 million Baht and the final completion is now expected for 2004. There will be trains running every 10 minutes and every 5 minutes during rush hour, which should ensure an efficient flow of traffic. With a total of 18 stations, the underground line will serve several business districts like Silom, Sukhumvit and Ratchadapisek as well as the Queen Sirikit Convention Centre and the Hua Lumphong central train station. It will aid inner city transport for residents and visitors, particularly those coming on business. This project will also contribute to improving the image of the city and will place Bangkok amongst the major world destinations for shopping, businesses and conferences. (/LA).
