Ceremony
around May the 10th
Sanam Luang, royal place in Bangkok.

>> It is a still with the same concern of
the respect of the traditions and a very colorful
ceremonial that the Royal Ploughing Ceremony took
place yesterday, thursday the 10th of May on Sanam
Luang, the royal square of Bangkok. Masters of ceremony,
religious, royal oxes, all were ready for this important
moment. Important on two accounts. On the one hand,
it is a great source of interest for the visitors
who enjoy the great quality show. And on the other
hand, it is the occasion for the kingdom to know
the predictions about the next harvests. Quality,
quantity, determining factors for Thaïland,
first world rice producer.
The royal oxes have symbolically drawn the first
furrow of the season in the soil of the royal
square, and then, have been consulted to predict
the future of the kingdom rice production. According
to the tradition, they have been invited to taste
several dishes. Their preferences have gone to
the rice, the corn and the herbs presented in
baskets made with banana leaves. Choices that
announce good omens, according to the astrologers.
The harvests and the rains should be abundant
for this new season of culture.
The economists estimate the Thai rice production
in 2008 at about 23,5 millions of tones, that
is to say a rise of 2,9 % in comparison with the
harvest of 2007. The Royal Ploughing Ceremony
aims at encouraging the farmers in their works.
