| Any method will do to
get through the dense traffic of Bangkok.
From fast and cheap to practical and comfortable,
the capital offers a multitude of means of
transport. It's your choice. |

The
'songthaew' (a pick-up truck with a
high roof and two padded benches) and the
'samlor' (three-wheeled cyclo-rickshaw
- like a non-motorised tuk-tuk) are rarely
seen in the capital but very popular in the
provinces and still have a long life ahead
of them. The songthaew is perhaps more practical,
user-friendly and economical (20-40 Baht)
but the samlor offers a more exotic way to
explore the sights. |

>> The Thais don't
walk that much in the city. To cross town
on foot is not actually that easy (see article:
Pedestrian,
be careful!) and on top of that
it's too hot! To get around a city where traffic
and congestion go hand in hand on a daily
basis, it's been necessary to come up with
various modes of transports to suit all tastes.
And the Asians don't lack imagination in this
area.
The bus - or rather buses, are a very
reasonable (5/10 Baht) and efficient way of
getting around. Where there are bus lanes
on the major roads, the buses manage to avoid
the traffic. Upon arrival in Bangkok, it's
best to get hold of a good bus map. The network
is vast and served by various companies offering
a range of comfort with or without aircon.
The Sky Train - which spans the city,
allows you to get away from the traffic jams
and the pollution of the streets. Not overly
used as it's rather costly (30/40 Baht) and
the two train lines only cover a part of the
city (see map).
It's often worth taking a taxi (40/50
Baht) particularly at certain times of the
day. The taxis are all metered, you just need
to make sure the driver understands where
you want to go. The best thing is to have
the address written down in Thai. If the 'authentic'
and the noise of a motor grab you, try taking
a tuk-tuk. Make sure you negotiate
the price and specify your destination before
getting in. If you're in a hurry and like
taking a risk, you can always use the taxi-motorbike.
It's fast and cheap (20/25 Baht) - but dangerous!
And finally you might be happy by the water
on the khlongs (canals), using the river-taxi
(3/15 Baht) - fast but rather limited. Or
on the main Chao Phraya river using the shuttle
boat (2 Baht for the crossing), express
boat or long tail boat. (/LA) |
