| When it comes to accommodating
visitors, Bangkok has made considerable efforts
to improve its services over the last few
years. The hotel industry has benefited from
this and has expanded accordingly. Finding
a place to stay in the capital is not a problem.

When you don't know Bangkok,
it's difficult to choose a location and a
hotel from a distance, especially when certain
establishments accommodate rather dubious
company… If you're not the adventurous type
and prefer to avoid this kind of situation,
it's best to book via a Tourist Authority
of Thailand office (TAT).
At certain times of the year, like November
to March, when there are a lot of tourists,
it's strongly recommended to book some time
in advance. |

>> In Bangkok there
are as many different types of hotels as there
are nationalities and types of people that
frequent them.
Tourists, travellers, businessmen, ex-pats...
have to make the difficult choice of where
in the capital to lay their head for a night,
a week, a month... Your decision will depend
on the area being near to the things you want
to see and do and of course the standard of
accommodation being in line with your budget.
Backpackers know by instinct or rather by
reputation, that Bangkok has reserved a little
friendly corner, created just for them, where
life is very cheap. Khao San Road for example
has many little family run guesthouses (with
communal bathrooms) at reasonable prices -
300/400 Baht per night. As a general rule,
accommodation in Thailand is more affordable
than in the West. For a high level service,
you can stay in one of the many fine hotels
in the business or tourist areas of Sathorn,
Silom, Siam, Wireless and Sukhumvit. In these
hotels, as well as very nice, comfortable
air-conditioned rooms, you'll often find parking
facilities, big swimming pools, gyms (with
sauna and steam rooms) and sometimes squash
courts, all for around 1,000/1,500 Baht a
night. For a slightly higher standard and
even more comfort, you'll pay around 2,000/3,000
a night.
The ultimate in luxury can be found at the
magnificent hotels that sit imposingly on
the banks of the Chao Phraya River, like the
famous Oriental Hotel (from 7,000 B to 15,000
- 40,000 B for a suite) which offers a magical
stay in sumptuous luxury that dreams are made
of. (/LA) |
