Wat Phra Kaew Sanam Chai road Bangkok.

The grouping Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of Emerald) - Grand Palace is opened to the public from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm (ticket office from 8.30 am to 11.30 am and from 1.00 pm to 3.30 pm). Long clothes must be worn.

>> The agitation around the sturdy wall (2 km) of the Grand Palace, built in 1783 gives the pitch of the importance of the place. The motivations of the pilgrims are numerous. On the one hand there are the religious coming to follow the church service and who have a free access. On the other hand there are the others! The tourists, the contemplatives looking for stories, art, marvels, magic, bedazzlement and dreams…

After having passed, under high security, at the appropriate entrance where each person pays their tax (200 bahts) and proves its correct appearance (arms, legs and feet covered), otherwise you won’t be able to go in, the den reveals at last its secrets.

The magic is straight away effective by the diversity, the complexity, the richness, the quality and the quantity of treasures to discover. The curiosity of the Wat Phra Si Rattanasatsadaram (the official name of the Temple) is the Bouddha of Emerald (picture), hence its touristic name, Bouddha of Emerald’s Temple. Situated on the altar of the royal throne, the sacred statuette (made of jade, of 66 cm) is the more venerated in Thailand. But that doesn’t mean that it is the more noteworthy thing of the site. There will be no salvation without tight organization. The domain is huge. Statues, sculptures, bas-reliefs, frescos, temples, shelters for relics… The three-dimensional treasure, harmoniously bathed in the vegetation, has no limit. The three hours allocated are not enough to appreciate the site as you should. (/JM)
